Plan with context

A car deal has three numbers: purchase price, financing cost, and ownership cost.

Negotiating only the monthly payment can hide a longer term, rolled-in negative equity, taxes, fees, and depreciation. This model keeps each layer visible.

01

Negotiate the price first

Start with the vehicle’s negotiated price before discussing payment. A payment can be lowered by stretching the term without improving the underlying deal.

02

Trade value and payoff differ

Trade equity equals the vehicle’s allowance minus the loan payoff. Negative equity increases the new amount financed unless it is paid separately.

03

Tax treatment is local

Some jurisdictions reduce the taxable price by trade value or rebates and others do not. The calculator exposes both assumptions instead of silently choosing one.

04

Financing fees costs interest

Rolling sales tax and purchase fees into the loan reduces upfront cash but makes those costs accrue interest for as long as they remain financed.

05

Depreciation creates equity risk

A vehicle can lose value faster than the loan balance declines. The balance-versus-value chart estimates how long the loan may remain underwater.

06

Budget beyond the lender payment

Insurance and a maintenance reserve do not amortize the loan, but they are part of the monthly cash commitment and total modeled ownership outlay.

Included

Price, rebate, down payment, trade value and payoff, tax-base choices, fees, financing, extra principal, depreciation, insurance, maintenance, equity chart, and amortization.

Not included

Fuel, repairs beyond the reserve, licensing renewals, parking, tolls, tax credits, manufacturer-specific incentives, resale transaction costs, or an actual vehicle appraisal.

Use it well

Bring a direct-lender preapproval, verify the out-the-door price, inspect every add-on, and compare both total interest and the estimated period of negative equity.
