Plan with context

The best compensation comparison puts money and time on the same page.

Base pay is only one layer of an offer. A useful comparison includes variable cash, employer-funded benefits, paid time, actual working hours, and the time required to get to work.

01

Pay frequencies are not interchangeable

Biweekly pay creates 26 periods in a typical year, while semi-monthly pay creates 24. The annual amount can be the same even when the checks differ.

02

Hourly and salaried work differ

Hourly pay often changes with hours and overtime eligibility. Salaried pay may remain fixed even when weekly hours vary; confirm the role’s actual classification.

03

Paid time has value

Paid holidays and PTO reduce the hours worked without reducing modeled annual salary, increasing effective cash compensation per hour actually worked.

04

Benefits belong in the comparison

Employer healthcare, retirement contributions, and other funded benefits may materially change the value of two offers with similar cash salaries.

05

Commute time is still time

The commute-adjusted rate divides cash compensation by both working and entered commute hours, making location and remote-work differences easier to compare.

06

Gross is not take-home

The net figure uses one user-entered withholding percentage. Actual payroll depends on taxes, elections, benefit premiums, retirement deferrals, and jurisdiction.

Included

Seven input frequencies, eight output frequencies, schedule, overtime, bonus, paid and unpaid time, benefits, retirement match, commute, withholding estimate, charts, and package breakdown.

Not included

Tax brackets, payroll-tax caps, benefit taxation, equity compensation, vesting, variable bonus probability, shift differentials, expense reimbursements, or employment-law classification.

Use it well

Compare written offers with realistic weekly hours and commute time, ask for the employer’s benefit-cost statement, and use the income-tax calculator for a fuller tax estimate.
